On the 16th of October 1945, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was founded in Quebec City, Canada. Their goal is to "modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all".
In 1968, the F.A.O. started a Money and Medals program to help spread its message of the urgent need to increase food and agricultural production. They encourage governments to use their coinage to promote this important message. In excess of 18 million dollars have been shared by participating countries and used directly in the development of agriculture.
Today the F.A.O. consists of 187 member countries, more information about them can be found at their website.
